I'm not a marketer, but have had to take on part of that job for 'our'
festival, the Northern Michigan Lamb & Wool Festival.
I'm wondering if I could get some ideas on print materials for promoting
the festival. We have a website and a logo (designed by list member
Marlene Cameron): <http://www.lambandwoolfestival.com> (Any
suggestions on making the website nicer while not abandoning
functionality also welcome :)
I'm currently working on a brochure and a bookmark--originally it was
just a brochure, but since my design skills are minimal, to say the
least, a bookmark is more and more appealing :) I need to check on
printing costs, though.
My own intended audience would be the guilds and fiber-related stores in
Michigan. Other people also want to put the word out to non-fiber
people, so the appeal of the pieces has to be sort of cross-cultural <g>
The essential idea from my perspective is to save money by not having to
send out so many booklets, since we have the website--and I will say, at
least half the registrations are coming from the website, so that's
working well.
At the moment, I'm working on a list of questions to add to the first
page you see when you open the brochure, maybe for the bookmark as well,
to help pique interest and lead people further inside. Along the lines
of: "Are you the kind of person who likes to ..... squeeze the yarn,
stroke the sweater..." Any suggestions for further questions that are
at least a little humorous? I'm not much good at thinking up funny stuff :)
And on the fiber side, I finished my first biggish felted bag, an
entrelac piece, which I'd only done a sample of before. It's perfect
for fast color changes, so I used some navajo 3-ply yarn that was from
rainbow-dyed top with 8 colors of primaries and secondaries of the MYC
color wheel--the color changes come fast and furious, often less than 25
stitches' worth, so entrelac on 12 stitches was ideal. I'm in the
process of working on another, this one inspired by the colors of summer
and the thought of a cottage garden in full bloom--rows of deep yellow
greens from dark leaf green to bright sunkissed new leaf green,
interspersed with rows of brights of all colors *except* green. 16
rectangles of 12 stitches each around, I'll probably do 7 rows, maybe 9,
between the triangle rows. Yesterday I knit a garter stitch strip for
the bottom, but decided I didn't like the proportions (2 wide by 6 long)
so I restarted and got about halfway through a 3 x 5 version. I think
I'll like this one better.
Isn't it fun to be able to design something from scratch--from the very
fiber, through the dyeing and spinning, and then knit something that is
perfectly right for that yarn?
