huge mistake of using ammonia
when I washed a beautiful "white merino"
fleece.
Ammonia will turn white gray.

If it's not already way too late, you might try a vinegar soak on that
greyed fleece. If you were just going to toss a ruined fleece, you'd
have nothing to lose, and a vinegar rinse has recued more than one
fleece from other problems (it'a actually good for the fiber - as long
as it's wool, that is).
