It's the ends of the fibres that poke the skin and cause the
itchies. When you feel a lock you just feel along the length of
it, but when it's knit, some of the ends poke out of the yarn. The
stiffer those ends (which usually, but not always, has to do with
the coarseness of the fibre) the more they prickle.
