'The Weavers' on his painting, was probably a bit of
artist's license.
He didn't title it The Weavers. He spoke Spanish. He
titled it Las Hilanderas. If he had wanted to call it
the weavers he would have said Las Tejedoras.
Although back then most weavers in Spain were men and
it would have been Los Tejedores. And a somewhat
different painting!
As to the philosophy, Velazquez is considered one of
the greatest figures of European painting. He was
well known in his own time as being erudite and
interested in intellectual puzzles, so I do not think
that the philosophical speculation about his work is
really stretching things too much.
