The exact formula reads:

yarn = 2000 yards per pound

divide 2000 by 454 grams per pound = 4.4052 yards per gram

multiply by 500g
4.4052 * 500 = 2202 yards per 500g

multiply 2202 by 0.9 (1 yard = 0.9 meter)

2202 * 0.9 = 1,982 meters per 500g

This number is close enough to the 2000 yards per pound that there is no
significant difference in the weight of yarn needed for a project.

ypp = meters per 500g
