Hi Fibernetters,

I am puzzled b y the focus of the use of the word "cleft" in a negative
sense as a part of a name of a type of birth defect. Cleft has many
meanings beyond its use the the term cleft palate. Men with a cleft in
their chin are often considered to be especially handsome. A cleft
buttocks is admired at many a bathing beach or pool, and young men
consider such a display by low-hanging jeans to be winning. The cleft
on a woman's chest, generally called cleavage from the same root word
as cleft - split or cleave - is likewise often considered an asset,
and designers of women's clothing go to lengths to disclose a socially
acceptable amount of same.

For Ryder to use the term for a wrinkle is a sheep's lip seems
altogether appropriate to me.
