Yes.  There must have been thousands of postcards printed in the 40's 
and 50's of a Chimayo weaver at his loom.  In some of the postcards you 
can see his skeinholder and spoolwinder. As it happens, there's one of 
these on ebay right now so you can check out the picture if you want to.

I think that that is pretty much what Rachel Brown drew her Rio Grande 
wheel from, but I suspect that they were used a lot more for winding 
spools for weaving than for actually spinning on, since people more 
typically use a "malacate", a spindle that you use in a bowl on your 
lap, to spin with.  In any case, the spoolwinder in the postcards, as 
well as the loom and the skeinholder now belong to us, and I use that 
very bicycle wheel spoolwinder all the time.  The wheel is actually a 
wooden rim bicycle wheel, which we've been given dates for, they weren't 
made for very long.  In any case the little machine works very well.  Of 
course I wouldn't ever spin on it, so I couldn't tell you about how that 
would go....
