We have a Kodak RFS 3600 - and are not impressed. Burns out highlights -
and each image seems to be sharpened even with sharpening off. Will wait to
see if there are any software upgrades that get over this.
I agree that the film transport mechanism should suit your application -
although the machine powering through 100ft lengths might be a bit risky.
It is only a 900 machine!.
<<ability to scan from top film-edge to bottom film-edge isn't necessary,
but it would be very nice, because each frame has a unique serial number
exposed on to it between the top film edge and the sprocket holes. >>>>
You could use a flatbed for the 100ft lengths - a bit messy - but you could
then get your top and bottom film edges in. I've just tried a stip of
negatives across the bed of our Scitex Eversmart Pro - and you can close the
lid without creasing. Again you would need to support the film as "shAf:o)"
suggests.
Final suggestion would be to create a similar rig to you Fotovix with a
light box and a digital camera. We recently did some tests with a Fuji S1
and some glass plates. This very much depends on your final use of the
image though (in our case the output quality would not be good enough). You
get a "softer" image than with a scanner - but you don't pick up any
scratches (like a cold cathode enlarger v point light source enlarger).
Depending on how you sort out holding the film, you might also be able to
get the edges too!
Hope that helps.

From what I can tell, the Kodak RFS 3600 should be able to take on
any length of film. Be careful, while this one can accept raw film
strip/rolls, it will be unsupported ... that is, the film will not
likely be as flat as if it were sandwiched in a holder. Film scanners
