It may be only tangentially relevant to this list, but I would like to ask
for anyone's views about what the prospects are like for obtaining work
engraving music.
I feel as if my life is at a kind of crossroads, and might possibly change,
and I'm thinking about the kind of involvement with music I have - and one
option I'm thinking about is trying to do work engraving music. Is there much
demand for such work, and does the supply of engravers more than satisfy this
demand, or does it fall short? Is that pattern (whichever it is) likely to
change in the forseeable future?
I would particularly be interested in opinions relating to Australia, since
I live in Healesville, near Melbourne in Victoria. I don't have a lot of
musical contacts myself, so will this prove a significant handicap? How would I
go about seeking work? If I could demonstrate that I was good, could I get work
on that basis? - or does it come down more to whom you know in the music world?
Is it a practical proposition to work through the Internet with clients
overseas?
What program should I use? Or should I purchase, and be prepared to use, a
variety of programs? I have no experience with using such software, except for
demonstration versions of Sibelius and Finale, but am prepared to learn it if I
decide to follow this course. I have studied music all my life and played the
piano, and done some composing, and am completely familiar with music notation,
and understand music theory, harmony, and so on thoroughly, and have a good
general knowledge of "art" or "classical" music, especially in the period onward
from about Beethoven. I am also attentive to detail, precise, and almost
obsessive about doing things correctly.
Based on this information, do my prospects sound good, and would this be
worth following up?
I would be grateful for any information or opinions.
Thank you.
Regards,
Michael Edwards.
