[Johannes Gebauer:]

>However, the point that Philip is making is perhaps the same that Jari was
>making earlier: You claim you have a lot of knowledge and are careful with

>much with real engraving detail.

I think you're jumping ahead a bit there, Johannes, reading meanings into
my remarks I didn't put there (or didn't intend to, anyway). I've just made a
preliminary enquiry, and you're already telling me you think I'm not concerned
with detail.
When the question of house styles and purely engraving-type detail was
raised, I admitted I didn't know that, and clarified that the knowledge I
claimed I had was referring to an ordinary understanding of how to read,
understand, and (hand) write notation. I was not meaning to be misleading about
my level of knowledge. Give me a break, please - I'm not *already* a
professional at this, such as some list members are.
I may be new to the level of detail you're talking about. This is not the
same as "not being concerned about detail". If I follow this idea, I'll
certainly learn about it.

>Professional music engraving is not about
>getting the notes right (well, you should get the notes right, too).

I understand this, and have no quibble with it. If I decide to do this,
I'm prepared to learn the necessary stuff. If I decide I can't be bothered with
this level of detail, or it's too difficult, or whatever (which I'll probably
only find out by experience), I'll just get out. It's as simple as that.

>You made it quite clear that you see nothing wrong with Igor's output.

I did not; I said nothing at all about what I thought of it myself. I've
not seen Igor's output (well, except for small screen shots); I made it clear
earlier that I had not yet used Igor. I have no opinion either way about its
output, and I certainly never claimed that I saw nothing wrong with Igor's
outpout. (If I somehow implied this, it was unintentional.) I was quoting what
other people had said, without necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with it.
If I *did* think Igor's output is okay, then that would simply mean there
were still things I didn't know yet. Fine - if I proceed with this, I'm willing
to learn the necessary things.
I accept the opinion given by several people on this list that Igor is not
suitable for professional work, and do not propose to use it for this work.
I respect the great knowledge of Finale, and of engraving and music
generally, that many members of this list obviously have, and appreciate their
advising me. But one or two people, such as Philip, do make me feel as if I'm
being jumped upon a bit, quite needlessly - just because I might have made some
trivial error in my e-mail (I assume, since I've not yet been told what I did
wrong). (Was it a spelling mistake, or wrong punctuation?)

>Again, I haven't looked at Igor for a while (because it is simply not worth
>it), but when I did last try it, Igor's output was simply not usable from an
>engraver's point of view.

Yes, I accept this. I'm not arguing about it. If I do this, almost
certainly Finale will be my choice of program. It's got a very good,
knowledgeable support group here - even if it's a bit tetchy at times.

>Now, I'd just like to warn you further: I have seen part's prepared with
>professional software like Finale or even Sibelius, that looked plain
>terrible, because the person who prepared them had absolutely no idea what
>he was doing.
...
>But I strongly believe
>that to become a good engraver you need several years of experience, a lot
>of stamina learning the intricacies of the software, and a really keen eye.

Well, thanks for the insider's view. Maybe it won't be right for me. I'm
only in the very early stages of researching it just now.
I repeat: I don't plan to use Igor for this. No-one needs to tell me
again, or berate me for the ignorance I apparently display merely by purchasing
Igor.

                         Regards,
                          Michael Edwards.
