This may sound trivial, but do you actually have the correct drivers 
installed for your sound card? Windows often recognizes a sound card's chip 
set and installs compatible drivers, but they will not always use all your 
sound card's possibilities. The default SB Live! drivers, for example, 
enable only one synth output, while the Creative drivers enable *two* 
separate synth outputs. Something similar might be the case with your setup.

What does the hardware info say about midi ports? I'm not sure where you 
find that info precisely, since I'm sticking with Win2k, but I guess that 
something like "Configuration panel -> Multimedia" is still available 
somewhere?
