I haven't really followed the discussion, but I can deliver a nice story
about the Pachelbel piece, that may put it into a different light for some:

Pachelbel's Canon and Gigue in D was first performed at one of JS Bach's
relatives (I forget which) at which three violinists, one of them I believe
Pachelbel himself, another one Bach's elder brother (?) "competed" with this
piece (the German word in the document is "wetteiferten").

JS was present at this occasion as a young boy.

I can try to find the complete quote if anyone is interested.

(I personally like the piece a lot, but only if it is performed by single
players on period instruments, in an appropriate tempo.)
