A few things relevant to some recent topics:

1) We had a discussion a few days ago on the difference between
composing a new piece on existing chord changes, but credited to
yourself, vs. crediting an existing piece or composer. If you want an
exteme example of this effect, check out the story of Mike Batt. He put
a 1-minute silence on a CD, co-credited it to John Cage, and now is
surprised that he is being billed for royalties by Cage's publisher:

As the publisher said, "If Mr. Batt wants to produce a minute of silence
under his own name, we would obviously have no right to the royalties."

2) Stu McIntire asked about upgrading Finale together with an upgrade
from Windows 98 to Windows XP. I don't know the motivation for doing the
operating system upgrade, but I share David Fenton's reservations about
upgrading a machine from 98 to XP. These upgrades do tend to be more
problem-prone than a fresh install.

Sometimes of course you may need to do this. When I upgraded a machine
from 2000 to XP - an easier upgrade on the machine than 98 to XP -
either Microsoft or my computer maker recommended uninstalling all
applications, then reinstalling after the upgrade. It took a while to do
that, but the upgrade has worked great. So if you do go ahead and
upgrade, I would uninstall your old version of Finale, do the upgrade to
XP, then install the new version of Finale.

3) Bill Sinclair indicated that he wants to have the notation match
playback exactly. This is probably fine for his needs, but that is not
always what happens in notated music. To choose just one example, Bach's
Well-Tempered Clavier has passages where the standard interpretation of
what is notated does not match what is played back. And how could a
simple 1-to-1 correspondence handle different interpretations of
ornaments over the centuries? For me, one of Finale 2002's most powerful
features is the increased flexibility for handling disparities between
the standard interpretation of what is written and what you actually
want to sound.
