Visually there isn't much difference between laserjets and inkjets at the same dpi, unless you have a very discerning eye and are looking for permanency.
There are people who will argue that there is a big difference between postscript and non-postscript output. And if they can see the difference, then that is their right to argue. I don't have a publisher's eye which is used to thinking in absolutely crystal quality. To my eye as long as it looks clear and easy to read and the layout is attractive and conducive to easy performance it is fine. But the differences between postscript and non-postscript ouput notwithstanding, 1200dpi is 1200dpi. But there are some very important differences, still between laserjet and inkjet output. For one, the inks still run when they get wet. They don't run and bleed if you get the paper slightly damp and dry it immediately, like they used to. And especially when used with paper designed for inkjets, there is no bleeding of the ink into the paper. But permanency is a big issue and inkjet inks fade fairly quickly when used a lot under bright lights. With the cost of laserjets so low, I would pay the extra money and buy a laserjet.
