That's it in a nutshell. OS X Midi as of Jaguar is a fully sanctioned
set of APIs evolved from from NeXT's Music Kit. Writing the same for
pre-OS X is one of the black arts and Coda's implementation is not
trivial. Consider HyperScribe or Speedy, which involve the coordination
of Midi input, database entries, and screen redraws. While changes to
Enigma are generally incremental, porting code evolved over more than a
decade in the other two areas is significant.
