If a measure already contains notes or rests, you can't get Finale to put in it's default (read that as Graphic) whole rests in other layers.

What you CAN do is simply create whole rests as an expression (or as an articulation) and then place them yourself. These have several advantages over the default whole rests in your situation: 1) they can be placed manually so you can adjust them up or down to avoid the other notation; 2) they have no impact on playback; 3) they have no(or minimal) impact on music spacing.

I apologise if this has come up before. I can't find any reference in my
archived messages or in the OLD.

How do I insert DEFAULT whole note rests? I'm working on a 3/8 divisi passage
and need whole rests in layer 2. I can put in REAL whole rests but then I get
the "too many notes" message
and the music spacing of the score goes haywire if I ignore it.

Thanks
Peter
