As with everything, different people use it in different ways. I find that it saves me time nudging things around when I'm finalizing layout, but like you I have most of my tools assigned to F keys, and if I need the Expression tool I still find it much easier to just hit F5 rather than selecting the Selection tool (Ctrl+Shift+A) and double-clicking an expression.
