Use the Playback Utilities plugin to turn off or switch chord playback in a selection. Available for both Macintosh and x86 platforms from my site.

Again, that's all fine and good but if you add new chords after invoking your plugin, they will play back unless you invoke the plugin again.
Hmph!

Did you actually use the plugin? It turns off or changes the output instrument for any given layer--including Expressions and Chords. It defaults to turning OFF the Chord Layer.

It's NOT the same thing as turning off Chord playback by changing the playback characteristics of chords.
Sorry, Philip, I was mistaken. However, if you add measures to your score, and those measures have chord symbols, you still have to invoke the plugin again.

That's why I wrote the plugin. Given the current PDK it's the closest thing possible to having them off by default. Select a region, apply the plugin. That's it.
I appreciate that yours is the best possible solution given the current PDK -- it's actually quite nifty and I'll probably start using it lots. BUT... this does not let Coda off the hook. We should not *need* a kludge to turn off chord playback globally.
