What about turning off percussion playback enitrely?
I suppose that one solution would be to turn off percussion notation before I print. Except that there might be occasions when I *do* want X noteheads, and turning off percussion notation would lose those. Basically, I want all the advantages that a percussion map offers, except that I want whole notes displayed with whole note noteheads.Use staff styles. Make the staff regular notation by default, and apply the "percussion map" staff style only to those sections that require X noteheads. (I would think you'd want to do this anyway -- I have separate staff styles for every percussion instrument, just so the staff name displays correctly in the score.)
