[it] is simply not even close to fair to compare a Finale document to a word processing document. There are several orders of magnitude of differences in complexity between the two.

An order of magnitude means a factor of 10. Is word processing really hundreds or thousands of times easier than Finale? Not in my experience!
David was specifically referring to document format--not usage. Because the Text Editor plugin involves the use of a text engine which implements a souped up version of Macintosh standard text formatting, and I'm more than familiar with the code, I can tell you from direct knowledge that Finale's document format is orders of magnitude more complex. It is also orders of magnitude more complex than the RTF format (which is simpler than TE format). Also, don't confuse the size of a document with the complexity of the format. If one has a lot of paragraph styles in a word processing document, they could make for a lot of bulk, but the mechanism for their implementation is quite simple compared to say a Finale Staff Style.
