Thanks for all the responses! (They were very helpful). My upgrade to Win XP is a success. (The only remaining "issue" seems to be my scanner, and a new CD of drivers is in the mail.) Finale works great--MIDI works in both directions (I have a SoundBlaster Live, connected to a MIDI keyboard; also an old Roland SoundCanvass ...); my CD burner works; my Samba network (6 other FreeBSD and Linux boxen, and an HP printer) works.

It turns out that on Windows XP you can have up to 10 (or is it 12?) monitors. Just plug new cards (either dual or single output) into the motherboard. My motherboard is two years old (I build all my Intel computers myself). My "primary" graphics card is an AGP (Advanced Graphics Port?) card (an ATI Radeon). I went to CompUSA and bought a $39.00 XPERT 128 PCI card (single port) and plugged it into the mother board. There were no conflicts. After booting, I went into the Control Panel, clicked on displays, and snooped around the tabs. The "Settings" tab is where I found where to configure the two monitors. (I realized that all my monitor-less computers still have videocards--and I decided to leave them there in case I need to plug in a monitor if one of them experiences a hard drive crash, reboot failure, etc., etc.)

It is *great* to have Finale open on one monitor and the PDF manual in another! (I use the latest Finale 2003; I haven't downloaded the latest update yet ...)

Hmmm... I wonder what will happen when I boot my (dual-boot WinXP-Linux) computer to Linux next time. ... (I'm not really worried ... just curious ...)

Thanks again for all the ideas I receive from this list!
