The advantage imo is that you can have _any_ combination of numbers, with a straightforward keyboard layout. I have enough simple key combinations to get stroked numbers in various forms, accidentals etc all at four different heights. I think this is much more flexible, and on the long run quicker, than making a symbol for every possible number combination. I cannot even imagine doing figures in heavily figured works and having to remember a key combination for every combination of figures. Your mileage may be different.
