With respect to slurs being interpreted as bowings
it should be remembered
that a single slur does not always mean that the phrase will be played in one bow. Every string section leader bows the parts for his/her section. For example in a Brahms symphony the double basses would not be expected to sustain eight tied notes at a dynamic of ff within one bow. In such a case the leader may indicate the number of up and down bows or simply indicate staggered bowing. These are not really issues for the engraver. Things may have changed from my days as a string player in the CBSO but I doubt it. |
