USB cables only go in one way -- that is, there is a top and a bottom to them. I can 100% guarantee you that if the cable for your MIDI interface fits your (computer) keyboard, it also fits the back of your computer. Which is where it should go.
I know this will be a learning process, as I have never set this up on my own. I know almost nothing about this, so let me start with the most obvious:

Yes.
It won't work.
MIDI interfaces are finicky. They are the most finicky of all USB devices. They *must* be plugged in directly to the back of your computer. They will not work if you use an extension cable. They will not work if you plug them into a USB hub. And they will not work if you plug them into the jack on the side of your computer keyboard.
Okay, I'm sure a million people will email me and say "It works for me!" but that's the point -- the only way to guarantee that it will work is to follow the instructions in the manual that came with your MIDI interface -- attach it directly to the USB ports on the back of your shiny new G4.
Step 2: Go to <http://www.midiman.com/support/driversearch.php> and download the OS X drivers for your MIDI interface.
Step 3: Go to Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup and configure your USB interface.
Step 4: Launch Classic and configure OMS.
Step 5: Launch Finale. Make sure it is configured to open a default document (as opposed to doing nothing, or opening the setup wizard, or whatever).
