Ascending minor 6th:
How about "Hearts and Flowers". Thats the one I was taught.
The first few notes of the tune are
C, Ab, G, F, Eb, Bb, C ..... For those who've never heard of it.

Not to belabor the obvious, but the whole point of the exercise is not just to find songs that have distinctive opening intervals, but to find such songs THAT EVERYBODY KNOWS! In one message someone suggested what I assume to be the Australian national anthem; wouldn't do us any good here in North America. And popular songs come and go and the ones you know depend on your generation. That's why folk songs are good for this kind of exercise, but even they differ from one culture to another.
And again, not to belabor the obvious, but serial intervals are one thing, but simultaneous intervals are another, and they seem to get short shrift in so called "sightsinging" classes (which have never, that I know of, taught anyone to sing at sight!). I would guess that the average 6th grader in Hungary, having gone through a well-planned Kodaly program, is much better at the musical basics than any college sophomore music major in America.
