With the slur issue, are you saying that the slur remains on the stem end but curves the wrong way, or are you saying that the slur won't stay on the stem end but instead places itself on the notehead side?
Have you tried hitting ctrl-f to flip the slur to the other side of the notes?

Also, the behavior of the slur when I apply it to the stem end of a group of notes, i.e., a grace-note group, is quite unusual, causing the slur to appear upside down and resistant to any changes I try to make.
