There are monitors that allow the screen to be physically rotated from landscape to portrait. If you just rotate the screen, obviously the image will appear sideways. In order for this to work correctly, the OS (or video driver) need to know how to also rotate the image. This lets you have one monitor which you can use in either landscape or portrait mode. As some have pointed out, the extra height that a portrait monitor allows you can be very useful when working on a score.
