You might want to visit http://www.danieldorff.com/commission.htm where I've got a page that can be helpful in a lot of ways. It still doesn't say numbers but it does help clarify things. Another resource is Meet The Composer which has a recommended pricelist. So many things are variables though. Are they producing a commercial CD? Playing it 100 times in JASRAC-licensed venues so you'll get ASCAP/BMI money later? Is it going to be played just once at a rural college? Would they cover expenses for you to come to the premiere? Things like this might increase or decrease your interest level. I've written a few pieces for lower fees than I should have because there were guarantees of many performances by ASCAP-licensed ensembles, and I knew the performance royalties would more than make up for the low fee.
Congratulations - which group? The Harmo Saxophone Quartet is the biggest name there.
