I used that once years ago, and scared the commissioner away forever. I think their suggested fees are (or were) unrealistically high.
So many things are variables though. Are they producing a commercial CD? Playing it 100 times in JASRAC-licensed venues so you'll get ASCAP/BMI money later? Is it going to be played just once at a rural college? Would they cover expenses for you to come to the premiere? Things like this might increase or decrease your interest level.
Indeed they would, but everything is pretty hypothetical right now. The quartet are sponsored by Yamaha, and my impression is that they'll need to talk Yamaha out of the money in order to make the commission.
Congratulations - which group? The Harmo Saxophone Quartet is the biggest name there.

It's the Kumoi Masato Sax Quartet. They sent me a CD of the concert on wh. they played my _Chamber Symphony_, and they're astoundingly good.
