Are my fears warranted? Should I bite the bullet and run the:

convert F: /fs:ntfs /v

or should I try to find somebody with a WinME machine that will let me install this hard drive and get at my files? or what?

Can you copy the files through the command prompt? It seems that MS-DOS and its usefulness is sadly overlooked these days.

Otherwise, based on my previous experience, you shouldn't fear converting the drive. I once converted the whole of the partition that contains my Finale files with no adverse effect. The conversion really does not change the data in any files; it merely reformats the drive's index of the files.
