The message is set to come up at a certain number of copies whether the printer needs it or not. The kit contains some parts that are *supposed* to wear out somewhere 100k and 200k pages, like rollers and the fuser assembly. Of course nothing wears out on schedule, so as far as I know, the main advantage of having the kit is to save you from having to troubleshoot and diagnose when those parts do wear out.
To get rid of the message, Turn the printer off, then holding down rocker buttons marked ITEM and VALUE to the LEFT, turn on the printer. Hold the keys down until the display readout says "RESET MAINTENANCE COUNT", and then release.
If you want to check on that kit any HP outlet in your area should have them. I understand they're pricey. If you can find out what's in the kit you might be able to get the parts individually as needed.
