Okay, I had a chance to download the Sibelius 3.1.1 for OS X demo today, and I have one word.

DAMN.
[snip]

I had the same feeling when I tried the new Sibelius for OS X. I'm not switching programs, because I've got too much invested in Finale and in the end it probably does things better, but the Sibelius competition could make Finale a better program.

My first impressions of Sibelius 3.1.1 were favourable, which surprised me since I am a longtime Finale user and defender.

1) Sibelius opened one of my old Finale files with very few graphical problems. Some files had better success than others, but the fact that I could even do it was impressive.

2) The sounds included with Sibelius are superior to the ones included with Finale 2004. This is not fatal since I end up using my own synths and samplers anyway, but it does create a good first impression.

3) Sibelius IS faster than Finale in terms of screen redraws.

4) I was very impressed that I could control the view percentage and also what page I was looking at while the score was playing.

As Darcy has pointed out, Finale simply has to match or beat Sibelius on items 3 and 4 to stay competitive.
