On the subject of file compatibility, here's an article by a software 
developer who was formerly on the development team for Microsoft 
Excel that gives some good reasons for making programs as cross-
compatible as possible in their file formats.

The basic idea is that switching (whether to a new version from an 
old or from a different program) is easier if you know you can go 
back.
