Hello all,

My venerable AudioWerk2 has never worked properly in OS X, so it's time to find a better solution.

I need an external audio interface, either USB or FireWire. Self-powered sounds nice, but I hear that interfaces with an external power source are better. True?

I need digital (SPDIF coax) input and output, also analog input and output. One set of each ought to be fine, I think (but see below).

I think 24-bit would be nice. I don't have any 24-bit devices yet, but that seems to be the new standard and I think it would be foolish for me to go with anything less.

Portability is good. I don't have a laptop yet, but I will as soon as Apple figures out how to put a G5 into one.

Right now, what I mostly need is a device to get digital audio from my DAT Walkman into my computer, which the AudioWerk2 completely fails to do in OS X (and honestly, it's been pretty spotty in OS 9. Not a good product, IMO -- or maybe my card is just a lemon, I dunno. But I've never had a lot of luck with it).

Eventually, though, when I get my laptop, I would like to use it to record directly to the laptop. In fact, what would be even better would be a device that allows me to record directly to a portable external FireWire HD (i.e., without the laptop). Does such a product even exist?

Right now, I'm using Core Sound's "low cost" binaural mics <http://www.core-sound.com/lcmics.html>, which seemed like a good deal at the time, and are nicely suited for use with the DAT Walkman. Eventually, though, I'd like to upgrade to something better, so I guess it would be nice to have something that had proper mic inputs (instead of just miniplug inputs) and maybe phantom power or whatever. But I don't know -- that's a ways off yet. I assume when the time comes I can just get a separate mixer with a SPDIF output and plug it in to the audio interface, right?

Anyway, any information and advice would be greatly appreciated.

- Darcy
