I have all three: the Read, Stone and Ross in my reference library. I feel
that multiple references are important, however, if I had to pick one, I would
select Stone since that is the more recent. I believe Read has another book
dealing with 20th century notation, however, I don't currently have that one.
I think it is still older than the Stone book.

Gardner Read's book is great. However, it is #2 in my order of reference,
to Kurt Stone's "Music Notation in the Twentieth Century." If you don't
have it yet, I'd advise getting Stone first.

And of course, Ted Ross's "Teach Yourself The Art of Music Engraving &
Processing" is indispensable as well, but more as a manual to re-read every
now and again than as a constant reference.

However, in the interest of preventing list warfare (I know many have strong
feelings about engraving references), I'll add the disclaimer that "all
statements in this post are the opinion of the author."
