Hi Andrew,
In Panther, you can program custom keyboard shortcuts (not macros or sequences) from the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane. However, this feature is not supported in Finale (nor in Sibelius). I put in a feature request to Coda about it, but I have also heard that Panther's custom keyboard shortcuts only work in Cocoa apps, not Carbon apps like Finale -- can anyone confirm or deny?
At any rate, even if it did work in Finale, this feature is much less useful than it first appeared because of a *terrible*, very un-Apple-like UI. In order to program a keyboard shortcut, you must first quit the program in question, then *type* the menu item *exactly* as it appears in the app's menus. If you forget exactly how it appears in the app's menus, you have to launch it and quit it again. And if, for instance, you enter the wrong type of ellipsis -- three periods in a row vs. a true ellipsis (and you will find that many app menus use both, indiscriminately) -- the macro won't work.
In fact, the only advantage to using the Panther custom keyboard shortcuts (apart from the fact that it's built-in and free) is that your custom keyboard shortcuts display next to the appropriate menu items, just like the built-in keyboard shortcuts. That's nice, but doesn't begin to make up for the horrible, cumbersome user interface.
And, like I mentioned, it doesn't work in Finale.
So anyway, you will need to get either QuicKeys X or iKey, and I highly recommend iKey. It's much cheaper (only $20), comes with an unlimited trial period (although it starts to nag you after 30 days), and I've found it to be faster, more stable, and easier to use than QuicKeys X. Since QuicKeys X can't import your OS 9 shortcuts, you will have to start again from scratch anyway.

I had gathered from various postings to this list that Mac OSX had some kind of built-in macro capability that obviated the need for such programs as QuicKeys. Yet I don't see any such thing in _Mac OSX: The Missing Manual_. Comments? _______________________________________________
