I use them all the time. The prime use at least for me is for doubling parts, which do occur often in the kind of music I edit. Eventually the mirrors will have to be converted (part extraction requires this) but they can save a lot of time.

you probably know this, but i have found it very useful to undo the convert mirrors immediately after extracting each individual part, so that any corrections needed in the score post-extraction can be effected with little or no headaches.

i used mirrors quite extensively in a recent score (mac-F2k3), with great success. they helped me reduce the size of a score from 2.5M (!) when i received it, to 1.4M once i had changed all repeated bits to mirrors. you need to plan out which expressions are to be measure- and staff-assigned: i found it useful to make the source for the mirror the 2nd measure, rather than the first, so that i can better maintain control of the appearance of various text expressions' positioning at the start of the repeated section, by using staff-assigned expressions in the first instance.
