Layout would probably NOT be linked, but NOTES would. Does that make sense? I can't count how many times I've changed something in a score and FORGOT to update it in a part. Re extracting the part would be way more time consuming. The placement of titles, etc, etc. I'd just like to have the note DATA updated throughout a piece. Each part's layout is different on the stuff I do.
Once again, my little copying routine that I noted is so easy, that I can hardly imagine justifying the kind of rewriting it would take to accomplish linking ONLY notes in Finale. And doesn't anyone edit anything else?
Key and time signature would be linked, as number of measures. I think kind of what http://www.noteheads.com/igor/igor.html Igor does. Where you can have separate layouts for parts, and tell the program what you want linked, but it will update major changes (IE: Keys, time signatures, notes, etc).
Hmm, it looks like kind of the same case as with Sibelius, that you are more or less stuck with the default placements, unless you want your score inheriting the adjustments you make to your parts.
I suppose this amounts to a different philosophy about what I want my notation program to do. For example, I HATE the way Microsoft Word makes assumptions about what I want done with my typing, like "correcting" my spelling without telling me, or putting bullets or numbers when I hit carriage return. And I STILL haven't worked out the formatting! I use AppleWorks instead, because it does what I tell it to. It would probably bug me to have Finale getting too big for its britches, writing changes to files that I didn't tell it to.
