I feel embarrassed asking this.
I have had Finale Mac since version 1 and did amazing amounts of work up to about 5 years ago. Now I'm a bit rusty!
I only do bits for myself these days but always get the updates. I have FinMac2004c.
Was just doing a piece and needed "X" heads for cymbals.
What I usually do for drum parts is use layer 3(stems up) for snare drum, 3rd space, layer 4 (stems down) for bass drum. bottom space , Layer 1 for "X" note head cymbals space above the stave.
What is the easiest way to create the X cymbol heads ? I have just completed an arrangement (the usual - stuck for time) and resorted to Special Tools.
I have looked at perc. maps and thought this was the answer but didn't work for me.
Looked in "Help" but nothing was immediately obvious - for my simple mind.
any suggestions greatfully received.
When I create drum parts I usually want the X-head notes always on the same line/space, so I created a percussion map to do this automatically for me. The Special Tool, while lovely, is a pain in the neck for this, as you have to repeat the action for every measure. Mass Edit>Change>Noteheads is fine for large swathes of measures, but it changes EVERY notehead in the area you select, rather than just the ones you want changed.
If I want a regular note-head on the G space above the staff, I enter G with the MIDI keyboard. If I want an X head, I enter Gb, but I have set the percussion map to SHOW it as a G with an X head. Same thing for the snare on 3rd space C - C# gives me the X head. In the bad old days before staff styles I also had B set to give me a slash, and Bb to give me a stemmed slash, so I could have slash notation, rhythmic notation, and regular notation in the same measure. Not necessary now.
This is my procedure (I use the JazzFont, but I'm sure it's similar in Maestro):
Add a drumset staff with the Setup Wizard. If you already have one in your template file, that's fine.
Staff Tool, double click the handle near the clef to open Staff Attributes.
I usually turn off "Independent elements - notehead font" because I don't like JazzPerc as a drum font. I use the normal JazzFont. You may choose what you like if you are in Maestro.
Beside "Notation Style" it should say "Percussion." Click the Select button.
The Percussion Map should say "Drum Set". That's fine, but if you want another, select it now. Click Edit.
Scroll down to G5 (MIDI note 79) Select it. (I would have selected F#5, as I want my entered G's to have regular noteheads.)
Drag the note by the handle in the window up to the G space, or type 11 into the Staff Postiion window. This is still correct even if you have selected F#, or any other note! This way, I can enter F#, but have it show up as G x-head.
Click on Closed Notehead - Select. For my needs I type lowercase y (character slot 121) in JazzPerc, but opt-sh-/ (slot 192) in normal JazzFont which gives me an x head. For Open Notehead I type uppercase T (slot 84) in JazzPerc, but select slot 253 in normal JazzFont (I can't remember the keystroke for that character).
THIS STEP VERY IMPORTANT - SCREWED ME UP FOR WEEK! Under "Notes to use for drum set" make sure to check the box "HIghlighted note". If you don't, then none of this will work.
Repeat on other notes (like C#) if you want to be able to have X heads on the snare, too.
OK your way back out of everything
Once you are done with this entire procedure, save this file as your template, and you will not have to do it again. Unfortunately, the Setup Wizard will not load percussion maps, so you will have to open your template with the custom drum staff, then add any OTHER instruments you might need with the Setup Wizard (Staff Tool>Staff Menu>New Staves(with setup wizard) )
