Wow, good detective work, Philip.

The last thing I did before switching out of Finale *was* printing to PDF. However, the PDF had completed long before Finale crashed.

Thanks for taking a look,

Finale crashed again while sitting idle in the background -- and it really *was* idle, not processing a long plugin or Mass Edit operation. Again, it may have been getting ready to autosave, although I couldn't say for sure.

Looks to me like this one has a chance of being reproducible. You did a print job? You perhaps chose where to save a PDF and then put Finale in the background?

My observations are that Finale has background loops which wake up from time to time to see if things in the UI need to be updated or otherwise accounted for. These background loops and Finale itself have long known problems involving determining which is the front window, which is the active window, which is the window targeted for keyboard input (user focus), and whether or not Finale is the frontmost process.

Finale (at least as it affects plugins) is applying its background dialog loop to dialogs which it doesn't "own". You can check with Ryan Demlow for reports about a Nav Manager dialog and typing into text boxes not working from last summer to verify this. Also known to me is that DoMenuCommand() doesn't set or react to some of the states mentioned above.

It looks like Darcy did a print job involving a Nav "Save As…" in Finale and then went to another app (maybe the Finder) to wait for the job to complete so he could further process the output file. But Finale's background loop (from printing) apparently can't tell that it "woke up" to an application state not the same as it began with and consequently tried to do something it shouldn't have.

All guesswork of course :-)
