Do you mean what setting you should apply globally or what to do when items start to collide because a high part lies below a low one? I think of the first as depending partly on the nature of the music: do the parts regularly go outside the stave? Even if they do, I usually change the default 1.1111 staff spacing to .9, which allows some adjustment when parts collide (I rarely have lyrics). The second is one circumstance in which I am happy to move the lower handle of an optimised stave (note that optimisation has a setting to retain all staves, e.g. for a first system), rather than work with numbers, when leger lines require more space on one side and their absence opposite allows reduced spacing. Don't touch the upper handle: it moves that staff in all systems (three cheers for "edit" "undo"). Any rules you get from a book on standard layout are more likely to relate to choice of paper than to what you can do with a notation program. I rely on an eye that I hope is adequately educated. > >And how does one calculate the value to put it in the "Space staves" box if >one uses system reduction? See above. One can select a number that relates to the full size system, but in any subsequent system reductions one needs to check the "resize vertical space" box in the percentage tool. -- Ken Moore [EMAIL PROTECTED] Web site: http://www.mooremusic.org.uk/ I reject emails > 100k automatically: warn me beforehand if you want to send one _______________________________________________ Finale mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
