When running any version up to 2003 (haven't tried in 2004 yet), I always have to turn off scrolling to hear changes that I've made since I turned scrolling on.  Especially for that reason, I hardly ever turn on scrolling.

I don't think this theory quite holds: It is true that when you press pause
instead of stop Finale will not recalculate the playback data, but it is not
necessary to switch off scrolling mode.
