There are a few things I wish they'd left alone, but overall, it's really terrific, with a lot of the earlier system 9 things improved. BUT... has there been tons of discussion about how bloody slow the redraw is in 2004?
Yes. (Apparently some people don't consider that a serious problem, but I don't want to get into yet another round of that discussion... )
It has diminished my productivity waiting for the various redraw processes to work.
Uh-huh. Try click assigning lyrics. Or nudging lyrics with the arrow keys. The entire screen redraws after each click or each nudge, and even on a fast machine this can take a *long* time -- much longer than redraws in Fin2004, even when you're running it in Classic. (The nudging is fixed in Fin2005 -- the click assignment, AFAIK, isn't.)
Am I doing something wrong?
Probably not -- but see below.
Is there a setting that I'm missing out on.
Make sure you turn off all the automatic lyric options, though (auto hyphens and auto word extensions). This can make a difference even if you're not using lyrics.
Also make sure you have the latest OS update (OS X 10.3.5), and use Cocktail <http://www.macosxcocktail.com/> to optimize your system. If you have a non-OEM video card (i.e., one that didn't come with your Mac), make sure you have the latest drivers for it.
Is there yet another upgrade that fixes this?
Fin2004c is the final upgrade for Finale 2004. Finale 2005 for Win *and* Mac (hybrid CD) is shipping now.
Is my computer too slow? (G4, pretty speedy with everything else).
Finale 2004 is very sluggish and non-responsive compared to most OS X apps. It requires a very fast processor to overcome the inefficiencies in the code. (Again, some people on the list dispute this... whatever.) I eventually decided I needed to shell out for a 1 GHz G4 upgrade for my Mac, because my old processor (533 MHz G4) wasn't cutting it anymore. For my purposes -- as always, *your* mileage may vary -- but for my purposes, Finale 2004 isn't really usable on anything less than a 1 GHz G4, and still then it's not nearly as snappy as I was used to in Fin2003.
Will a faster G5 fix this?
To an extent, yes. Obviously, a dual 2.5 GHz G5 is going to go a long way towards compensating for Finale's sluggishness.
Is it something in the works to be fixed by Coda?
Well, Finale 2005 is out. I don't have my copy yet, so I can't comment about the speed of the final version, but word is it's mostly comparable to Fin 2004 (although the automatic hyphens and word extensions have apparently been improved).
When I initially complained about the appalling sluggishness of Fin2004, especially when compared to the latest version of Sibelius (which has virtually instantaneous drawing), the answer was, basically, "Oy vey, tell us something we don't know already. We're working on it, we're working on it."
Hopefully, Finale 2006 will be up to Sibelius standards when it comes to redraw speed.
Is everyone already tired of complaining about it?
Yes. Also very tired of people complaining about the complaints -- so maybe we could just skip the whole "Yes it is! No it in'it!" discussion this time around?
