You didn't say exactly what kind of Mac you have. I'd assume its some sort of G4, perhaps a Quicksilver or something?

A couple of things to try to get your Mac faster.

1. RAM. Max it out. It totally helps everything out.
2. Faster HD, a 7200 RPM.
3. Defragment your hard drive with something like SpeedTools or TechTool Pro
4. Try something like CPU Powerup http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24175 to give additional priority to Finale. I've noticed that this helps a lot on my G4 cube (450Mhz) if I am doing something big with Finale.

But, a faster computer is the best way to go. My Quicksilver 933Mhz G4 at home is easily 2 times faster than the Cube. And the Cube was faster than the 9500 I had running OS X (1.5 Gigs of RAM, ATI 7000 video card, IDE 7200 RPM Drive). The 9500 had a lot of things that slowed it down.....
