How about still using the shape designer, but instead of creating the shape from scratch, invoking the text tool in the shape designer, finding the shape you desire in the jazz font, typing that into the shape, and setting the size of the font to 24 points. That will still be a shape expression, and you might be able to do it simply by editing the existing shape.

While your method would work, there is absolutely no reason to use the shape designer or to make this a shape expression. It's a one-character glyph in JazzFont. All she needs to do is create it as a Text Expression. That's much easier and more straightforward.
