I wonder if the timing was an issue there. The
marketing department underwent some leadership changes
around that time, with some new hires, and I wonder if
this particular arrangement may have been lost in the
shuffle.

MakeMusic is doing a lot of things well in regards to
schools. NotePad has proved to be a great way to get
people interested in Finale, and in my experience
there isn't a lot of confusion with thinking that
NotePad's capabilities are representative of Finale
(but people DO associate the ease of use of NotePad
with Finale, which is great). And SmartMusic is a big,
big deal. Sure it isn't bringing in as much money as
Finale yet, but it has only been available in its
current packaging for about 2 years. And its growth in
the schools is insane. I will be very surprised if
SmartMusic doesn't pass Finale up in revenue in the
not-too-distant future. Teachers are discovering that
it really, really works, and school-sponsored home
subscriptions are taking off like crazy.
