I could be wrong, but I don't think that is the issue. Andrew said the problem was specifically when he launched Finale. Try one of the following:
a. Change the MIDI preferences so that the Smartmusic softsynth isn't selected in the MIDI out box. Or;
b. Move the Smartmusic softsynth out of the Finale folder into another one. If it can't find it, it doesn't load it.
The second solution seems to me more likely to work.
