In a fit of stupidity and delusion I downloaded and installed Win XP SP2 on my *non-critical* IBM Notebook as an experiment - I have Finale 2k4b on this computer. I was running Win XP Pro Sp1 - and all was working beautifully.

The installation appeared to proceed smoothly, but upon reboot, problems soon emerged:

(1) Very, very sluggish
(2) Some hardware ("unknown devices") could not find drivers
(3) Finale opened slowly, but playback quality was appalling - audio device properties not showing up correctly in Control Panel
(4) Windows Task bar virtually inoperative - START button does not respond for minutes
(5) Strange dialogue windows appear with notices re various Services being 'denied' and having reluctantly to be 'closed'.
(6) After a number of reboots, system virtually comes to a halt and dialogues come up saying system has to closed down to non-specific error.

My 14yr old son takes me for long walk to calm me down - "It's only a stupid computer Dad!".

Later, calmer, I roll back SP2 to SP1, but even MORE dysfunctional after that.

Booted in SAFE MODE and used SYTEM RESTORE to restore to a previous point, and now all works well.
What a waste of my time and sanity.
