On the subject of tonal systems etc., 2 things:
I never meant to imply that George Russell's thinking had nothing to recommend it - just that it doesn't particularly suit the way I organize my own thinking.
And - an empirical piece of evidence (of what, exactly, I'm not sure): Pieces in minor tonalities often end with Picardy thirds. Jazz musicians sometimes stabilize the endings of pieces in minor by lining up the overtones over a bass note a perfect 5th below the root of the final minor chord, putting the minor third in the tonality further up the harmonic series (Am or Am6 with a D under it).
I think (and I don't want to start some big argument here) that this is an indication that many listeners find these ending sounds more stable than a minor chord. Of course, I understand that we accommodate different levels of consonance/dissonance in different contexts and at different times.
