Well, that would be rude. Several people on this list have already given you a satisfactory answer. If you don't like the answers you're getting, you're free to take your question elsewhere.

It so happens that I know people with older versions of Finale that get good midi sounds--at least satisfactory.

There's an important difference between "older versions of Finale" and "Finale 97." Yes, it's possible to get limited MIDI support under Classic with MacFin2003 and 2002 -- many of us did just that while we were waiting for Fin2004 to be released, including me. But there were/are significant hurdles to getting that configuration working, and it gets harder and harder the further you go back. Trying to get MIDI to work under Classic in a pre-Fin2000 version is foolish and likely to cause you a great deal of frustration -- as several people have already told you.

Of course, you are free to ignore this advice and try to stick it out with Finale 97 -- even though the cost of an upgrade to Finale 2005 will solve your problems and costs far less than an external sound module -- but no one on this list is going to tell you any different than I did.

Everything works fine except sounds.

That's true. But "sounds" are what you were asking about.
